A warm refrigerator is one of the most common calls we get in Houston — and in about a third of cases the fix is something simple. Before you book a visit, run through this checklist.
1. Check the power and the thermostat
It sounds obvious, but start here. Make sure the outlet works, the breaker hasn’t tripped, and nobody accidentally turned the temperature dial. The fridge should be set to 37°F (3°C), the freezer to 0°F (-18°C).
2. Clean the condenser coils
Dusty condenser coils are the #1 cause of poor cooling we see. When coils are covered in dust and pet hair, the compressor runs hot and cooling drops.
- Unplug the refrigerator
- Find the coils — usually behind the bottom kick panel or on the back
- Vacuum them gently with a brush attachment
3. Listen to the fans
Open the door and hold the door switch: the evaporator fan inside should hum quietly. A loud, scraping or completely silent fan often means iced-up or failed motor.
4. Check the door seals
Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket isn’t sealing and warm, humid Houston air is leaking in.
5. Don’t block the vents
Overfilled shelves can block the air vents between the freezer and the fridge section, so cold air never reaches the fresh-food side.
6. Give it 24 hours
If you just loaded a week of groceries or the door stood open, give the unit a day to recover before assuming the worst.
When to call a professional
If the coils are clean, the fans run and the seals are fine but the fridge is still warm — the problem is likely the compressor, a refrigerant leak or the control board. These repairs need gauges, parts and experience. Call us at +17135431253 — we offer same-day visits across Houston and the suburbs, and the diagnostic fee is applied to the repair.
