5 Dishwasher Maintenance Habits That Prevent Expensive Repairs

Most dishwasher breakdowns we repair in Houston start small: a clogged filter, a greasy spray arm, a kinked drain hose. Five minutes a month prevents most of them.

1. Clean the filter monthly

Twist out the cylindrical filter at the bottom of the tub and rinse it under hot water. A clogged filter is the most common reason dishes come out gritty and water stands in the tub.

2. Wipe the door gasket

Food residue on the rubber gasket leads to leaks and odors. Wipe it with a damp cloth and check for cracks.

3. Run an empty hot cycle with cleaner

Once a month, run the hottest cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or a cup of white vinegar on the top rack. It dissolves grease and limescale you can’t see.

4. Check the spray arms

Toothpicks work great for clearing clogged spray-arm holes. Blocked holes mean weak, uneven washing — usually noticed on the top rack first.

5. Don’t pre-rinse to zero

Modern dishwashers need a little soil to balance detergent chemistry. Scrape plates, don’t polish them — fully pre-rinsed dishes can actually etch glassware.

A warning sign you shouldn’t ignore

Water left at the bottom after every cycle means a drain problem: filter, drain hose or the pump itself. Caught early it’s a quick fix; ignored, it can fail the pump and flood the floor. If your dishwasher is draining slowly, text or call us at +17135431253 — we repair all major dishwasher brands, including Bosch, Thermador and Cove.
